Left to languish in intense pain and die, a helpless dog could barely move as he moaned in quiet agony after having been dragged to an isolated section of a public park in Compton, California on Thursday.
Phoenix left for dead with a heavy chain preventing him from moving.
When a good Samaritan accidentally spotted the dog lying in the bushes entangled in a heavy chain, the woman reached out to Animal Control, but no one showed up to help.
Worried about the dog who appeared to have been beaten and burned, the woman called the Compton Fire Department for help, and with a stroke of good luck for a dog nobody cared about or wanted just an hour earlier, the captain's wife, a volunteer for A Wish for Animals rescue organization, arranged for the dog's new life to begin.
Dubbed Phoenix, the sweet bully breed mix was rushed to emergency help where his wounds were cleaned, started on antibiotics and given pain medication.
On Friday, the first of many surgeries began for skin grafts on his front paws; the prognosis is still uncertain.
More surgeries have been scheduled, and he has debridement of dead tissue every day or two He will remain at the veterinary hospital for an unspecified amount of time until such time he is able to be fostered by the Compton's Fire Department's chief.
An investigation into this horrific case of animal cruelty continues; two other dogs suffering from similar injuries in the area have been reported. As of this time the reason for the horrific abuse has not been determined.
