"Trayton Joiner, 2-Year-Old Kentucky Boy, Killed By Train While Walking With Dog"

By Tim Ghianni

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Jan 19 (Reuters) - A two-year-old boy was struck and killed by a train on Monday while he was walking with a dog along railroad tracks in southwestern Kentucky, police said.

The boy, identified as Trayton Joiner by the Christian County coroner's office, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he died, said Hopkinsville Police Sergeant Martin Lopez. Hopkinsville is about 70 miles northwest of Nashville, Tenn.

Hopkinsville Police spokesman Paul Ray told WKDZ radio station that the train engineer saw the dog first, and then the child with the dog, but was unable to stop in time.

The train had two locomotives and was pulling 106 empty coal cars from Nashville, Tennessee to Madisonville, Kentucky, said CSX Corp. spokesman Rob Doolittle.

"It's a tragic situation and our sympathies are with the family involved," said Doolittle.

The dog, a female pit-bull mix, was also struck and was taken to Skyline Animal Clinic in Hopkinsville. She was expected to survive, according to clinic staff.

Lopez said officers located the child's mother, and the investigation is continuing. (Reporting by Tim Ghianni in Nashville; Editing by Mary Wisniewski and Diane Craft)

Good with kids?

RICHARD WELTER / SHUTTERSTOCK

Parents who worry about a pit bull tearing into their child's flesh would shudder at the thought of a Staffordshire bull terrier being called a "Nanny Dog".

But that's how some aficionados have referred to the breed, according to a website called The Truth About Pit Bulls.

The Nanny Dog rebranding is designed to show how good these dogs were around children in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Truth About Dogs claims that the term has been milked by 21st-century pit-bull owners to promote greater acceptance of the breed.

This information came under a headline stating: "From 2004 to 2010 59 US children were killed by the family's, babysitter's, neighbor's or friend's pit bull."

In 2013, a pit-bull advocacy group called Bad Rap said that it didn't support referring to these canines as Nanny Dogs. For that, The Truth About Pit Bulls site offered thanks.

But others still use the term, regardless of the number of kids who've been killed or maimed by the breed.
