In a Houston,Texas neighborhood, a stray, young pup gingerly approached three young area residents on Sunday - just looking for some gentle words, a snack or two and a place just to belong. No one knows where he came from, but the friendly pit bull terrier had been wandering the area for sometime - animal advocates always smiling as the dog's tail and his butt wiggled in pure joy whenever anyone would pet him.
And on Sunday, when the three animal lovers allowed the dog to crawl into their laps for some much needed attention, a disgruntled neighbor hurried over to berate the young women renting the home for befriending the dog. The man's hateful words complaining about the "stray dog problem," especially the "vicious pit bulls" and the lack of Animal Control not coming out to the home to pick up the dog, motivated the already angry man to take matters into his own hands.
"Ignited by fury, the neighbor followed the dog around to the side yard and opened fire upon him four times with a .22 caliber pistol as the dog was trying to flee under the house rented by the girls he had just been visiting. The dog managed to make it under the house where he remained for 24 hours. It took that long to finally get animal control on-site to retrieve the terrified, injured dog out from under the house. From there, he was taken to BARC and processed through their system before being released to us (Triumphant Tails, Inc.) so we could rush him to our vet," posted Kym Ann Dabideen-Denton, co-founder of Triumphant Tails on the organization'sFacebook page.
Now named Caliber (Cal), one bullet entered into the dog's femur just above his left front elbow, traveling in a horizontal direction shattering bone in its path. Veterinarians believe his front left leg can be repaired through surgery at a cost of $5,000 (low end) to $6,000 (high end). They are not recommending amputation of the front leg because the three-year-old dog also has a torn ACL in his back leg which will require surgery in the future.
As to a legal investigation of the shooting, Houston Police Department have stated the neighbor contends he shot the dog in "self defense" although witnesses have stated the man followed the dog to the side of the house which was not his property.
"We are told that the case “might be” handed over to the DA’s office but, so far, it has stopped there. HPD did not issue any citations to the perpetrator. If this case falls to the wayside, they are sending the message that stray dogs have no right to justice… and that it’s completely okay to go on private property to shoot a stray dog if you wish. We intend to make sure that we secure the masses to be a voice for this innocent dog," stated Kym.
Surgery is planned for Caliber on Friday. To help, please visit the YouCaring Fund, donate via Paypal kymann@TriumphantTails.net or visit the website and click on the"donate" button. Checks can be made payable to Triumphant Tails, Inc., P.O. Box 338, Kemah, TX 77565.
