Pit Bull haters are just now realizing that Merrit is a crackpot wannabe!!

Pit Bull haters are getting so frustrated with the constant repeals of breed specific legislation around the world and have started attacking each other for it's failure.

 The fact is Merrit is not a scientist or a statistician he's a washed up journo trying to get his five minutes of fame off the deaths of thousands of pit bulls with his disinformation!

A FIRE EXTINGUISHER for fending off a determined pit bull attack is going to be less than useless. You just might end up dead -- and covered in white dust to boot -- in spite of what one quack who chimed in would have you believe.

Bruce Freeburger I am a runner. I searched to see how Tasers worked on pit bulls as a Taser would be non lethal. Police grade Tasers don't stop their bite. Mace? news report was the spray just made the pit MORE aggressive. Halt II is generally the best pepper spray for other dog breeds.

Pit Bulls and Amputees Mace works against pit bulls sometimes ... sometimes it does not. Google news stories for incidents and read for yourself. Having it handy is obviously better than having nothing.

Bruce Freeburger Halt is the ONLY spray (it's a pepper spray) issued by the US Postal Service. Halt II has more of an additive that makes the burning last much longer. Both versions of Halt only cause temporary disability and will not harm the animal or victim long term. You must get as close to the nostrils and eyes as possible and keep the button pressed until the animal retreats.

Laquita Hilton Pit Bulls and Amputees -- And having a .357 is even better...A 9mm, if you can handle it...I own both, but decided on the .357 because in an emergency, I might be trying to handle either a small child or a small dog on top of my weapon, and under those conditions, the 9mm might be too much to handle...

Laquita Hilton Kathryn Dunigan -- If you are yours are attack by a pit bull, you will wish that you were armed....And not with a knife...To stop a pit bull with a knife, the animal would have to bleed out while you were holding it back....Something which most people are not strong enough to do....A handgun would be a much better defense...

Laquita Hilton Max Laughlin -- I, too, live in Texas, and carry a .357 at all times because of our dog problem....I thought about carrying my .38, but I wondered whether it would stop a pit bull.....Thanks for the information on the .38..

Serafima Yan I think the best therapy is a total ban of fighting breeds. They outlived their bloody purpose. Demand legal changes. Write letters to local authorities, congressmen and media. Arrange protests and demonstrations. Killing pit bulls will just support breeders, they will just breed more to fill the demand. We do not have to live our lives in the War Zone, killing animals around. Prevention is the best therapy.

Jimmy Younger If a fire extinguisher has ever worked to stop a pit bull attack, it would be news to me. I worked in a large 911 call system that included humane officers, LE and rescue. FACT: Fire extinguishers are a waste of time. Guns stop pit bull attacks. If youhave a different belief, you're relying on anecdotal trash and fantasy. And Chris Balduc, please share examples of gun owners hijacking the issue, or acting unpredictably during a pit bull attack. Your statement speaks to an anti gun bias supported only by your false assertions. The truth is, you're a Johnny-Come-Lately to the 'movement' who would compromise our ability to defend ourselves, family and pets, because of your preexisting anti gun bias. Not the other way around.

Laquita Hilton Serafima Yan -- I am ex-military, and when I decided to get a carry permit, I took a class to make certain I complied with all the rules and regulations, so yes, I feel that I can handle my weapon(s).....And while I would not "enjoy" killing a pit bull, I would do so without hesitation to save the life of one of my children/grandchildren, or the life of my own 11 pound terrier....Or my own life for that matter...

Pit Bulls and Amputees No one is suggesting people go out and randomly shoot pit bulls. A ludicrous interpretation of our position.

Everyone, however, has a right to DEFEND themselves from AN ATTACK by one of these monsters.

The fact is that a firearm is the best chance to ensure your own survival ... or perhaps someone else who is being attacked by a pit.

Pit bulls are the canine version of a Terminator. Would you spray a Terminator with mace or a fire extinguisher and hope that it would work? Of course not.

Our communities are INFESTED with these creatures. Pit attacks can, AND DO, occur at any time, and in the unlikeliest of locations. Read through some of our past wall posts for a sampling.

You can also set up a Google news alert for "pit bull attack" and watch the delivery results throughout the day. The reports you'll see are only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

No normal person wants to kill an animal unless it's a matter of avoiding death or serious injury. We can think of few things worse than being torn to pieces by a pit and, therefore, are prepared to prevail in any encounter with an attacking pit -- decisively.

Imagine if the lady in Detroit who, a few days ago, saw her son dragged under a fence -- and torn to pieces by a pack of ravenous pits -- had been carrying, for example, a .38 revolver in her purse. Her son would almost certainly still be alive today. Instead, she watched helplessly as he was disemboweled -- his guts ripped out.

It's extremely unfortunate that our everyday lives have become so needlessly endangered by the widespread proliferation of pit bulls and their ilk. Their increasing presence requires a dramatic change in mindset in regard to personal safety.

Merritt Clifton I recommend fire extinguishers because I have been logging fatal & disfiguring dog attacks for 33 years. Over that period of time, firearms have had about an 80% success rate in stopping a pit bull attack with the first shot, with about a 20% rate of inflicting collateral harm to another person or animal. Fire extinguishers have had about a 70% success rate, with no irreversible collateral harm. Mace & other small sprays have about a 30% success rate. Knives and blunt instruments have a negative success rate, meaning that attempting to use them most often results in more harm to victims and bystanders rather than less. That's the data; everything else is just someone's opinion.

Sharon Yildiz Amputees, I can't believe you are attacking Merritt. Whose side are you on? Don't you know the story behind the "academic imposter" assertion, made after an interview under false pretenses by a pit bull advocate?

I think a fire extinguisher could work on a dog that is latched on--where you can get them full on in the face at point-blank range (unlike the video of the kid). If nothing else, they suck the air out of the environment, and the dog would likely release and move away to get some air. The surprise and noise factor may deter a dog that is not fully committed yet to the attack--as in the video of the dog that attacked the child on a bike and was scared off by a cat. A fire extinguisher has some perks too, as they can be carried pretty much anywhere in public, in a mall, etc.--unlike many weapons. They are also everywhere, and you can grab one if nothing else is around. If all else fails, you can use them as a bludgeon, as Merritt has also pointed out.

Pit Bulls and Amputees Mr. Clifton has zero credibility with us. The facts concerning his statistical methodologies are what they are. They do not stand up to scientific rigor. Period.

Mr. Clifton took it upon himself to post to this page and make claims based on alleged statistics without the means to back them up. That's because he can't.

We know all about Huffington Post's bias for pit bulls, however, the portrayal of Mr. Clifton is, in our view, largely accurate.

Moreover, only a fool would suggest arming yourself with a fire extinguisher to fend off a vicious pit bull attack. It's the kind of ridiculous "advice" that ends up getting people killed.

We do not promote guns. We do, however, take the position that people have the right to defend themselves against vicious dog attacks by any means necessary. It so happens that a firearm is, in fact, the single best way to do that, and the one which offers the highest probability of success.

Mr. Clifton. Let's get real. If you're going insinuate yourself into a public policy debate (or come onto our FB wall and insult us) then you'd better make sure your credentials, data and statistical methodologies are unimpeachable.

Kathryn Dunigan I think one of the most despicable things he's written was an article which basic premis was that there is more child abuse in areas where there are more hunters therefor hunters are child abusers. Anyone can see the failed logic and animal rights bias in this. It's like saying more people drown in the summer and more people eat ice cream in the summer therefor they drown from eating too much ice cream. Ad hominem.

 It certainly seems as though the penny has dropped when it comes to Merrit's disinformation and fake stats and Beth has displayed her ability to cuss like a truckie but unfortunately Beth no matter how much you curse at everyone Merrit still won't be credible nor will his so called statistics?

 I suggest everyone over here in the real world grab some pop corn and enjoy the show as these fools implode which was always inevitable given their whole campaign is based on lies and disinformation.
